From a sonic standpoint I wanted Post Truth to be a more subtle version of Is Wayne Mosh. I know the title might suggest some kind of commentary on the state of truth in society at large but it's actually more of a reflection on personal truth. Ideas and beliefs I held for certain in my 20s aren't quite the same in my 40s. I guess the older I get the certainty I found in so many things is simply no longer there. This record is an exploration of my post truth beliefs.
LAST VERSE FIRST:
This was the first song written and recorded for this collection. The main thing I remember about this track is I had this song finished with only the first verse written. Meaning, I had recorded all the other parts and pretty much had it mixed before the chorus, second verse, and outro lyrics were written.
In the Bible story of Job, there is this scene where his wife tells him to curse God and die. This was after Job had gone through all this shit. (He lost his kids, money, livelihood, health) anyway I don’t know why but I think about that a lot. So that first verse I’m thinking about Job and the rest is commentary from the aftermath.
LITTLE SHIVERS:
My time as a true believer and the fault lines that it created in my spirit.
A retrospective of sorts.
STILL A FIRE:
This one is probably my favorite one from Post Truth. After fighting addiction for so long you eventually realize that it’s not the thing you are addicted to, that you are fighting. And after you realize what you’re fighting is in you then I guess it’s all about learning to let go. Like most things Harrison said it best:
Try to realise it's all within yourself
No one else can make you change
And to see you're really only very small
And life flows on within you and without you
DOWN TO THE CENTER:
The piano part got stuck in head when I was in the backyard with Birdie so I ran inside, and the song just popped out. It all went pretty quick. I dig the piano part and the “it’s haunting my love” line.
For some reason when I sang the choruses,I kept thinking about that movie Reign of Fire with Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale. Take that however you want.
OH VANITY:
So I had this riff for a long time. I was going to write a Katie’s song with it but ended up writing a Katies song with it for Wayne Mosh to do.
The BOTTOM LEVEL:
This one is a true story. So it’s all in the song.
HOLY LAWS OF GREED:
This was the second song written and recorded for post truth. For a long time it was just this one and last first first. It’s just me raging, so I guess I’m still looking.
